Summer Travels 2023: A few days in Normandy

One of our last train rides of the trip was riding a commuter train from Paris to the town of Rouen in Normandy.

In Roueau, there’s a gothic cathedral every which way you turn. This is the Church of Saint Maclou, nowhere near the biggest cathedral but one of the prettier ones. When I see a gothic church it looks to me like an impossibly tall, drippy structure, with swirls and curls and arches, like an over-decorated wedding cake. So that’s what I try to capture.

The city might be best known for it’s grand gothic cathedrals, but I loved these half-timbered houses that line the narrow medieval lanes. Their base color is usually a soft buttery yellow with the timber in a range of darker shades.

We spent a magical day exploring the stunning white chalk cliffs and tidepools of Etretat. Apparently, this was a spot popular only with French tourists until the Netflix show Lupin made it widely known. Glad we went early in the morning before the crowds came in.
